Company History

David Johnson, an Iraq combat veteran, founded ArmedZilla in 2009. David served six years in the Army and three tours in Iraq with the 10th Special Forces Group. He returned to his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona in 2006 and had a difficult time transitioning to civilian life. David found it hard to relate to his old friends and missed the service lifestyle. After searching for existing solutions to find like-minded individuals with whom he could relate, he discovered the needs of his community just weren’t being met. He eventually realized the need for a network that would allow veterans to easily find and support one another.

In August of 2009, David had formulated his idea and ArmedZilla was born. With little money and a couple of friends he was able to create a simple website that launched in February 2010. The groundswell of support was overwhelming and David soon found that his simple website wasn’t going to be enough. David worked tirelessly over the next several months and found a few investors that believed in him and his vision. By December 2010, he was able to hire his first employee and by September 2011, the ArmedZilla team had grown to twelve.

David’s vision to bring the military community together in one secure place and fundamentally change how the public connects with America’s Armed Forces was realized. On 11/11/11 a sophisticated new solution was launched to the nation, and that solution, in a word, is ArmedZilla.

CEO Bio

David Johnson, Founder, CEO, Board Member and US Army Veteran

David was born in Saudi Arabia where his father was a principal defense liaison officer in foreign military sales with McDonnell Douglas and Hughes Aircraft. He spent his early years growing up in the Middle East and became fluent in Arabic. In August 2000, soon after graduating from high school in Phoenix, Arizona he put his language skills to use by enlisting in the US Army.

Early in his enlistment, David attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. After spending two years in the intelligence field, David transferred into Special Operations – 10th Special Forces Group, Ft. Carson, CO, and was assigned to a ten-man special operations team that was on the second plane into Iraq in early 2003, completing three combat tours.

David continued to operate on a special operations team for the next three and a half years, deploying in and out of Iraq. David and his small team conducted unconventional and counter-insurgent warfare in Iraq. David was responsible for intelligence gathering, focusing on high-level targets, and conducted more than 100 raids and combat patrols. He also was responsible for briefing senior military commanders in his area of operation. Because he spoke fluent Arabic, David conducted more than 125 hostile interrogations and was a lead member on countless missions throughout Iraq.

Upon David’s honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Phoenix to attend Arizona State University, where he graduated in 2008. During college, David met and worked with highly successful entrepreneurs and learned that he, too, could build a company that would allow him to continue to serve and support his fellow service members.  In 2009, he founded ArmedZilla to help solve one of the military’s biggest challenges: to connect and support all veterans, their families and supporters.

In October 2010, David was voted one of Arizona’s top young business owners compiled by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com in their annual list of “35 Entrepreneurs 35 and Under.” David is married and lives in Phoenix, Arizona.
